Centenary Baton Dinner
Centenary celebrations kicked off in December 2013 with a specially designed centenary baton starting its journey around the UK. The baton, launched in Anglesey where the first WI meeting was held in the UK in 1915, travelled throughout the 69 federations in England, Wales and the Islands to celebrate the links of friendship and community developed through the WI, and finished its trip at the Annual Meeting in June 2015 at the Royal Albert Hall. Buckingham Palace Garden Party
In celebration of the WI Centenary The Duchess of Cornwall, joined by The Countess of Wessex, The Duchess of Gloucester and Princess Alexandra hosted a Garden Party for 8000 WI members at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday 2 June 2015. One member from each of the Anglesey WIs was invited to attend. A splendid day was had by all.
Centenary Panels Exhibition
Showcasing a 100 years of the WI, the craft exhibition brought to life the work that the WI has been involved in during each decade and the influence it has had on communities and the country.
On display were thirteen stunning hand-crafted panels; each panel designed and created by WI members from the 13 Federations in Wales and focusing on a period in the history of the WI.
Centenary AGM from the Royal Albert Hall
The AGM this year was held in the Royal Albert Hall in the presence of HRH Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Anne and the Countess of Wessex. Members from Anglesey travelled to attend the AGM and those who were not lucky enough to get tickets were able to watch it in Cineworld in Llandudno or at home on their computers via a live link.
Toll House Exhibition
Anglesey Federation opened up the Toll House for the weekend of the Centenary Panels Exhibition to welcome many WI members and visitors from all over the UK. Tea and Cake was served in the Garden
WI Centennial Fair
Members from Anglesey visited the WI Centennial Fair in Harrogate. A wonderful event.
Wales Centenary Conference
Many of our members attended the Wales Centenary Conference and Concert in Cardiff in September
Centenary Gala Dinner
On 25th September a Gala Dinner was held at the Trearddur Bay Hotel where our Vice Chairman, Carolann Wedlake, presented a cheque to Carl Hudson, paramedic working on the Wales Air Ambulance helicopter. During our Centenary Year of celebrations for the 100th Year of the first WI on Anglesey, members of 23 WIs on Anglesey have worked together to raise £2,200 for the Air Ambulance. Many events were held from a ceilidh, coffee morning, afternoon tea, games and bell ringers in a member’s garden, cake stall and stalls at car boot sales.
