Annie Lord, Treasurer, and Sue Jennings, President, of Rhydwyn & Llanfaethlu WI, were inspired by the Public Affairs Committee at AFWI to become Climate Change ambassadors. They wanted to make a difference to our world, so becoming pro active seems the way forward.
Annie and Sue will be in touch with each WI about our plans, but would be happy to speak at one of your meetings before next April 2023, and show some slides from the NFWI on Climate Change.
Sue and Annie are organising a Climate Change Conference to showcase World Earth Day, to be held on Friday 21st April 2023 on Anglesey. The venue is yet to be confirmed, but it is planned to have several Speakers talk on the subject of ‘Plastic Soup’ in our seas and waterways, and plastic pollution. There will be a Trade display, goods for sale, and we hope our local MP will open the event. It is hoped to involve Secondary school young people in a square metre survey of micro plastics on our local beaches, with any WI members who want to join them. This is yet to be arranged, but it is hope the Science Park S- Parc will assist us in arranging it, as they have close links with the schools here.
We would like each WI, or as a group, to think of a topic to showcase on the day of the Conference, be it up cycling old clothes, making and selling sanitary pads, planting trees with Elaine Green, or whatever leads to conversations on how to reduce our consumption of plastics.
On 23rd June we did a litter pick with a member of the public, and the local farmer who is collecting it all, as the beach is down a steep track, at Ynys y Fydlyn.
We are aware that several WI’s litter pick, well done! Every little helps.
