Anglesey Federation of WIs were delighted to announce that were awarded £1167.94 from the Co-op Local Community Fund. This money is to put towards two very important WI events this year including the NFWI-Wales conference held last Wednesday.
The Federation were pleased to be hosting the NFWI at the Wales Annual Conference on Anglesey this year. Over five hundred WI members gathered from all over Wales to hear inspirational speakers, such as actor Huw Garmon, who hails from Anglesey, and is well-known for his part in the 1992 Welsh-language film Hedd Wyn. He gave a talked entitled Our Film Star role in our own lives sharing highlights from his interesting career in film and television.
Huw Jones, Chairman of the S4C Authority addressed delegates about the role and work of the Welsh language television channel and its vision for the future.
Other interesting speakers included Lona Mason who discussed the collection of Welsh landscape painter Sir Kyffin Williams, which is held in the National Library of Wales, and looked at aspects of his life and work.
Historian and author Catrin Stevens explored the experiences of women who worked in Wales’ post-war manufacturing industries and share some of the fascinating stories of the factory girls gathered by Archif Menywod Cymru/Women’s Archive Wales as part of its oral-history project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Some of this award will also be used for materials towards displays and duplicated booklets to inform the public about the theme Back to Our Roots which compliments the Eisteddfod theme Through the Mirror at the National Eisteddfod at Bodedern in August.
The conference was also addressed by NFWI-Wales Chair Ann Jones, NFWI Chair Janice Langley and Head of NFWI-Wales Rhian Connick.
Ann Jones, Chair of NFWI-Wales stated that she was delighted that this year’s conference was held on Anglesey with the theme Back to our Roots which is so apt with the first WI in England and Wales formed at Llanfair PG nearly 102 years ago. “We all need to honour and respect our history and roots in order to move forward with enthusiasm for the future."
Anglesey Federation would like to thank the Co-op in Llanfairpwll for encouraging us to apply for funding for these two projects.
